Lignocellulosics as a basis for second generation biofuels and the future biorefinery

Principal objective:

Develop fundamental knowledge about central processes for cost-effective conversion of lignocellulosic materials into second generation biofuels and value-added products.

Central processes include biomass pretreatment, hydrolysis and fermentation of carbohydrates and thermochemical conversion of process by-products.

The project is carried out as a competence building R&D project under the RENERGI program of the Research Council of Norway.

R&D partners:

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (UMB), SINTEF Materials and Chemistry, University of Bergen, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Paper and Fibre Research Institute (PFI). PFI serves as project owner and coordinator.
